But does it float:

I’m trying to get close to the language of thought. It’s hard to put into words what the mind does, but drawing can map those processes better than anything but music. It’s so agile. It’s like a cloth you put over some complex object and it takes on the shape of the object exactly.

From Grain Edit:

As a kid, watching Sesame Street and 3-2-1 Contact was a daily ritual. Of course, there were particular animations from those shows that I could watch endlessly, such as three rocks squabbling about how cross a lake. With the advent of YouTube, these animations have resurfaced and offer a trip back to simpler times of wonder and discovery. But who made them?

Introducing Al Jarnow, the mastermind behind the short films embedded into our collective memory. Celestial Navigations: The Short Films of Al Jarnowcompiles a retrospective of Jarnow’s familiar animations from CTW along with his more obscure shorts. Jarnow experiments with geometric shapes, color, scale, and proportion in his films, creating everlasting works that communicate changes through time and space to both young and old.

Cool.

A new superhero, or an escapee from Burning Man, or just a fantastic costume?

From the Flickr account of SiLver sKY. Caption says:

I was in LA [at the Griffith Observatory] and this guy shows up in a suit from head to toe made of glass. I thought it was pretty cool. I asked him if I could take a picture from below. So this is me laying on the ground with a broken mirror above my head pointing. Pretty Cool!

I’m becoming more and more aware how subjective my experience of the world really is.

From Art Knowledge News:

The Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA) presents the exhibition “Feelings are Facts”, from 3 April to 20 June 2010, fruit of the first collaboration between Olafur Eliasson, the Danish-Icelandic artist, and Ma Yansong, one of the most prolific Chinese architects. Together the artists have created an installation specially conceived for the of UCCA’s Big Hall, uniting architecture, light and fog. Eliasson is known for his exploration of human perception, and he often works with light, shadows, color, water, wind, or fog to create a specific environment in order to move us to think about our experience of our surroundings – perceptions we usually take to be self-evident. Ma’s architecture stands at the forefront of new experimentation in building structures, refashioning form in bold pursuits of perfection.

Some things about this image intrigue/disturb me:

1) I can’t help but wonder whether the “native dancers” are authentic, and feel that the truth of that matter is critical to making sense of this image, 2) the face of the tourist man seems to bear a strange expression relationship with the face of the smallest dancer in the foreground—both seem to be more than enjoying themselves, and 3) the sun is behind the photographer, which means that there is a stray shadow cast, presumably by him/her, on the bottom left of the image, which blends in with the shadow of the tourist woman. Seeing that is a somewhat unsettling window into the reality of the “happening.”

From Art Knowledge News:

“I was here” questions and presents different approaches to the subject of tourism, from a photographic heritage, which seems to be innocuous, anonymous, forgotten and often of average quality - from the technical point of view. Tourism and photography have always maintained a close relationship - one is growing parallel to the democratization of the other.

I pretty much like anything with images that look like they were made with a spirograph.

A group of my RISD classmates made this in 2003. It’s still pretty impressive to me.

The Prado Museum opens its new galleries dedicated to Medieval and Renaissance Spanish paintings. This new development plan of reorganization and expansion of collections has been given the name, “The Collection: The other extension”, is yet another important phase of it, the one that completes the presentation of the collections installed on the ground floor of the Villanueva building.

So, yeah, it has a geodesic dome in it. But that’s not the only reason I like it…

What do you get if you gather as many iPhones as possible and let them play with each other? A huge musical organism that is not only self-organizing, but also evolving with the sound environment.
