North Carolina DOT to spend millions on “critter crossing!”
Transportation officials, with a strong push by environmental regulators, intend to build two underpasses just for wildlife and a smaller wildlife tunnel, as well as lengthen four bridges along the four-lane highway. Chunks of the estimated $400 million roadway also will be lined with 10-foot-tall fencing to funnel animals toward the dedicated crossings.
