As part of the programme of events organized by French cultural institutions for France’s “Turkish Season”, the Louvre is hosting three exhibitions with a Turkish theme. Explore the range and richness of the Louvre’s collections through a selection of works illustrating a period, artistic movement, or theme. The Turkish Season at the Louvre is supported by the Izmir Chamber of Commerce. On exhibition at the Musée du Louvre through 18 January, 2010.

When I was studying painting at RISD, I got obsessed with this era of Islamic art, mostly because of the colors and 2-dimensional design compositions. They have such a strong, graphic sensibility to them. In this one, the composition is fairly centered, except for the places at the top where day is “peeling” away from night, or on the left side, where the artist has left a slight edge that pushes you back into the image. I also love the use of patterns.
