I just listened to a wonderful broadcast of To the Best of Our Knowledge on Libraries. The three segments address the state of reading in contemporary culture, a writer’s perspective on libraries, and an editor’s view on the state of books looking back over a long career in publishing. All three segments were great, particularly the second and third. The second includes an interview with writer Alberto Manguel, who has amassed a personal library of over 30,000 books (pictured above). His descriptions of reading at night in his library, as well as the “stream of consciousness” approach to ordering his books, were fascinating.
The picture above comes from a New York Times article on Manguel’s library.
